Qualifications:

• Experience with REST-based interfaces, C++ and LAMP stacks is required.
• Have strong leadership and change management skills,being able to galvanize energy and great people around driving growth through great software and insure successful implementation through influence and hands-on leadership.
• Have a strong understanding of software and services environments that underlay virtual worlds, while also having a strong business sense.
• Demonstrated ability to paint a vision for growth and deliver on it.
• Excellent command of software process, architecture, design principles, problem-framing skills, verbal and written communication skills.
• Exemplary ability to build positive, collaborative relationships across teams/groups/functions through facilitative leadership and to "raise the bar" continually as an effective leader of positive change.
• Strong track record of developing and hiring great people.
• Experience, comfort and track-record in dealing at all levels in a large organization and in leading both through influence and hands-on ownership.
• Proven success in early stage companies with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally.
• In-depth AND hands on knowledge of software services and LAMP.
• Have great communication skills and being able to paint an exciting vision for software systems and drive it into practical reality.
• Demonstrated success working in and promoting a rapidly changing, collaborative and iterative product development environment.

Education and Experience:

• 10+ years experience in defining and delivering server software products and services to a large number of customers.
• Bachelor of Science in Computer Science.

Job Description and responsibilities:

Overview:

Linden Lab is seeking a world-class software engineering leader to join the Core Technologies group. Linden Lab is the maker of Second Life, a virtual world application used globally by millions and built upon the innovative user contributed 3D content and scripts. In this role the engineering director will lead and grow a team of virtual world server engineers to extend and retool the software that simulates and operates a virtual world. This leader must be extremely people focused and passionate about growing a great team delivering outstanding results to Linden Lab's core offering: virtual land. Work will require an understanding of high performance, distributed, hosted applications and design patterns for managing real-time 3d graphics generation serving 100,000s of simultaneous users interacting within a virtual space.

Responsibilities:

• Lead engineering to extend and evolve the existing virtual world server.
• Lead wrapping a closed client-server system with public facing APIs for use in building internal products and tools.
• Open up the functionality to external developers via REST-ful SOA patterns.
• Attract, develop, and inspire great talent including remote staff.
• Champion product-technology roadmaps, architecture and process improvement.
• Use Agile software development and software quality practices to ensure code is delivered with quality, on time and with the agreed scope.
• Collaborate with product management to drive engineering roadmaps and schedules.
• Regularly do hands-on design and project reviews.
• Be a catalyst for software architecture best practices.
• Travel to CA (once a month) is required for this role as are quarterly trips to the UK.
