The ideal candidate:
Qualifications:
- 5+years real world experience working on large-scale web search, indexes or crawlers
- 2+ years experience developing relevance scoring algorithms
- Strong analytic capability for evaluating and improving systems based on metrics
- Strong C++, Python
- Fluency with Django
- Fluency with MySQL or other SQL databases
- Background in Machine Learning, data mining and ads optimization techniques are a plus
- Comfortable with SOA, REST architectures, PHP
- GSA administration and tuning experience a plus
- Self-starter who plays well as part of a dynamic team
- Must thrive in multi-tasking, quick moving, distributed thinking environment
- Comfortable in an agile development environment with a focus on test-driven development
- Experience with internationalization/localization a plus
- Experience any of the following is a plus: Lucene/SOLR, Javascript, JQuery, Amazon S3 or EC2, Unix command line and scripting
Education and Experience:
MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience (PhD a plus)

Linden Lab seeks a Lead Software Engineer - Search eager for the challenge of bringing a delightful search experience to all users of the premier virtual world Second Life. The Search Lead works with the search team to develop search tools that deliver reliable, relevant results, improve discoverability and customer satisfaction, and drive business goals. The Search Lead is responsible for developing innovative technologies for a large-scale, high-performance distributed search engine. Primary responsibility will center on design and implementation of the search engine and search advertising. Responsibilities:
- Scale, implement, and maintain search systems that include data services in PHP and Python, Google search appliances, and MySQL databases. Build interfaces for the Second Life viewer, grid, and web platforms.
- Develop algorithm improvements that dramatically improve search relevance and ranking
- Develop features for search and advertising
- Develop algorithms and logic to increase relevance across several different collections and search tools
- Develop qualitative and quantitative models of user behavior
- Measure and analyze search quality
- Become a subject matter expert in virtual world search issues and solutions
