About the Company:

Instructables is a web-based documentation platform where passionate people share what they do and how they do it, and learn from and collaborate with others. The seeds of Instructables germinated at the MIT Media Lab as the future founders of Squid Labs built places to share their projects and help others.

We're located in downtown San Francisco in an old salon, with gorgeous natural light and access to our roof. At our lab, we have a laser cutter, 5 sewing machines each with a different specialty, a full kitchen, and plenty of hand-tools in addition to the computers you'd expect. We have work-sponsored Pirate Raids and Zombie Attacks, Build Nights, Pizza Offs, indoor skydiving, trapeze lessons, and monthly build-days.

The ideal candidate:

  • Expert knowledge of JavaScript, Ajax, CSS and HTML
  • Extensive experience with JavaScript libraries such as Prototype
  • Ability to write clean Object Oriented JavaScript
  • Working knowledge of JSP, Java, Java Servlets
  • Production skills using Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Familiar with all current cross-browser requirements
  • Determination to debug and test what you have built
  • BS or MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience

We'll be asking you for code examples, and perhaps a test requiring you to fix something currently not quite right on our site.

Finally, we love to hire from within our community, so if you haven't already, author an Instructable.

Job Description and responsibilities:

Instructables is seeking a talented user interface engineer with a passion for JavaScript and usability. You'll need to be able to make our website lovable, easy to use, and fast to load.

You will implement new user-facing designs and features, troubleshoot slow-downs, track down and fix any weird bugs that leave our community members scratching their heads, and generally want to have a positive impact on the largest DIY community.
